Updated November 2024:
Every time Microsoft ends support for a version of their Windows operating system, we are frequently asked how to easily tell what version of Windows is on their computer.
Here’s two methods for determining the version of Windows on your computer:
1. Using System Settings
A straightforward way to check your Windows version is through the Settings app.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open Settings:
- Press the Windows key + I or click on the Start menu and select Settings (gear icon).
- Go to System:
- In Windows 10, select System and then About.
- In Windows 11, select System and then scroll down to About at the bottom.
- Find Your Version and Build Number:
- Under Windows specifications, you’ll see the Edition (like Home or Pro), Version (like 21H1 or 22H2), and OS build.
2. Using the Winver Command
The winver
command is a quick way to see your Windows version and build information.
- Press Windows Key + R:
- This opens the Run dialog box.
- Type “winver” and Press Enter:
- A small window will appear displaying the Windows version, edition, and build number.
