Due to the hazardous materials and metals in electronic equipment, they can&#8217;t be just thrown in the garbage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are getting rid of an old computer, it is recommended that your personal data be wiped from the drive. If you&#8217;re giving an old computer to a friend or family member a new user account can be created, then your old user account(s) should be deleted. If the computer is being donated or recycled, the hard drive (which stores all of your personal data) should be removed and stored in a secure location, or reset\/erased so that all personal files are removed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/give-your-pc-a-fresh-start-0ef73740-b927-549b-b7c9-e6f2b48d275e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microsoft<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/guide\/mac-help\/erase-your-mac-mchl7676b710\/mac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apple<\/a> operating systems include utilities to reset\/erase wiping the device. Older devices may require a specialized data destruction procedure, otherwise have the hard drive removed. We have access to such programs, or can recommend one if you&#8217;d like to do it yourself. We can also remove the hard drive from your old computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have unused gadgets such as laptops, cell phones, portable music players, digital cameras or LCD monitors you can get <a href=\"http:\/\/computertechsreno.com\/tips\/2010\/01\/get-cash-for-your-old-gadgets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cash for your unused gadgets<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your computer equipment can also be recycled, donated or destroyed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a title=\"Click to view the external link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bestbuy.com\/recycling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Best Buy<\/strong><\/a>, <a title=\"Click here to view the external link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.staples.com\/recycle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Staples<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.batteriesplus.com\/recycling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>BatteriesPlus<\/strong><\/a> have free recycling programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For added security, <a aria-label=\"American Document Destruction (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/addnv.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Document Destruction<\/a> will shred your old hard drive for a nominal fee.
