Updated 10\/5\/17 with additional resources and clarifications:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Equifax, one of the large credit reporting agencies in the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.equifaxsecurity2017.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently announced<\/a> a data breach that may affect over <del>143<\/del>\u00a0145 million Americans. In case you&#8217;re not familiar with the population of the United States, there&#8217;s currently about 250 million Americans over the age of 18. Initial reports indicate that exposed data may include\u00a0names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and, in some instances, driver\u2019s license numbers. Note that Equifax DOES NOT have access to passwords to your financial accounts.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Trade Commission posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumer.ftc.gov\/blog\/2017\/09\/equifax-data-breach-what-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a helpful article with suggestions on what you can do to help protect your financial data<\/a> now that the data breach has come to light. However, contrary to Equifax&#8217;s advice that includes entering your personal information to check to see if you&#8217;ve been affected by the breach and sign up for their free credit monitoring service (do you feel comfortable about entering your information on a website operated by a company that didn&#8217;t keep your information secure in the first place?) &#8211; security researcher Brian Krebs <a href=\"https:\/\/krebsonsecurity.com\/2017\/09\/breach-at-equifax-may-impact-143m-americans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommends placing a credit freeze on your file<\/a>, and further explains how to do it in <a href=\"https:\/\/krebsonsecurity.com\/2015\/06\/how-i-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-embrace-the-security-freeze\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Additional information from the FTC includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Check your credit reports<\/strong>\u00a0from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion \u2014 for free \u2014 by visiting\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.annualcreditreport.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">annualcreditreport.com<\/a>. Accounts or activity that you don\u2019t recognize could indicate identity theft. Visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/identitytheft.gov\/\">IdentityTheft.gov<\/a>\u00a0to find out what to do.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Monitor your existing credit card and bank accounts closely<\/strong>\u00a0for charges you don\u2019t recognize.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consider placing a\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/0497-credit-freeze-faqs\"><strong>credit freeze<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0on your files.<\/strong>\u00a0A credit freeze makes it harder for someone to open a new account in your name. Keep in mind that a credit freeze won\u2019t prevent a thief from making charges to your existing accounts.<\/li>\n<li>If you decide against a credit freeze,\u00a0<strong>consider\u00a0<\/strong><strong>placing a\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/0497-credit-freeze-faqs#difference\"><strong>fraud alert<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0on your files.<\/strong>\u00a0A fraud alert warns creditors that you may be an identity theft victim and that they should verify that anyone seeking credit in your name really is you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>File your taxes early<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 as soon as you have the tax information you need, before a scammer can. Tax identity theft happens when someone uses your Social Security number to get a tax refund or a job.
