This supersedes advice given below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Method #1:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Windows 7 Startup Repair<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Described at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/windows.microsoft.com\/en-US\/windows7\/What-are-the-system-recovery-options-in-Windows-7\" target=\"_blank\">this Microsoft website<\/a> &#8211; follow section &#8220;To open the System Recovery Options menu on your  computer&#8221;<\/p>\n<h5>To open the System Recovery Options menu on your  computer<\/h5>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ol>\n<li>Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and  then restart your computer using the computer&#8217;s power button.<\/li>\n<li>Do one of the following:\n<ul>\n<li>If your computer has a single operating system installed, press  and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the  Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you need to try again by  waiting until the Windows logon prompt  appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.<\/li>\n<li>If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow  keys to highlight the operating system you want to repair, and then press and  hold F8.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the  arrow keys to highlight Repair your computer, and then  press Enter. (If Repair your computer isn&#8217;t listed as an  option, then your computer doesn&#8217;t include pre-installed recovery options, or  your network administrator has turned them off.)<\/li>\n<li>Select a keyboard layout, and then click Next.<\/li>\n<li>Choose your User Name from the drop-down list and type-in your password (if none &#8211; leave blank).<\/li>\n<li>On the System Recovery Options menu, click a  tool to open it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/computertechsreno.com\/tips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/SystemRecoveryOptions.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1039\" title=\"System Recovery Options\" src=\"http:\/\/computertechsreno.com\/tips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/SystemRecoveryOptions.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"410\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/computertechsreno.com\/tips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/SystemRecoveryOptions.jpg 410w, https:\/\/computertechsreno.com\/tips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/SystemRecoveryOptions-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>Choose &#8220;System Restore&#8221;, follow the prompts to choose a restore point previous to December 1, then restart your computer when finished restoring. If your computer restarts normally, after logging to your operating system, please download the latest <a href=\"http:\/\/free.avg.com\/us-en\/download.prd-afh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AVG installation file<\/a>,  run it and when asked, choose the <strong>Repair installation<\/strong> option.<\/div>\n<div>If Method #1 is unsuccessful, follow the steps for Method #2 (below).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Method #2:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Download, create and run the <strong>AVG Rescue CD<\/strong> as mentioned in  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avg.com\/us-en\/226386\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AVG Rescue CD  guide<\/a>. &#8211; We will leave copies of the AVG Rescue CD at <a href=\"http:\/\/computertechsreno.com\/shopinfo.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technology Center<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Select the <strong>Utilities<\/strong> item in the main menu and run the  <strong>Midnight Commander<\/strong> file manager.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">In Midnight Commander, navigate to the following  folder:<br \/>\n<strong>mnt\\sda1<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\"> (if you have more disks, number can  vary)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Then navigate to:<br \/>\nProgram Files (x86)\\AVG\\AVG10<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Find the following files: <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\"><strong>avgrsx.exe<\/strong> or <strong>avgrsa.exe<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\"><strong>avgchsvx.exe<\/strong> or  <strong>avgchsva.exe<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Delete both files by pressing the <strong>F8<\/strong> key and confirm the  deletion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Quit the Midnight Commander and reboot your computer by selecting the  <strong>Reboot<\/strong> option in the main menu.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After logging to your operating system, please download the latest <a href=\"http:\/\/free.avg.com\/us-en\/download.prd-afh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AVG installation file<\/a>,  run it and when asked, choose the <strong>Repair installation<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/computertechsreno.com\/tips\/fix-for-dec-1-avg-update-snafu-that-renders-64-bit-versions-of-windows-unable-to-boot\/print\/\" title=\"Print This Article\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"WP-PrintIcon\" src=\"https:\/\/computertechsreno.com\/tips\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-print\/images\/printer_famfamfam.gif\" alt=\"Print This Article\" title=\"Print This Article\" style=\"border: 0px;\" \/><\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/computertechsreno.com\/tips\/fix-for-dec-1-avg-update-snafu-that-renders-64-bit-versions-of-windows-unable-to-boot\/print\/\" title=\"Print This Article\" rel=\"nofollow\">Print This Article<\/a>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you are unable to boot to your operating system after the last AVG 2011 update 3292, it is necessary to do the following to solve the situation: EDIT 12\/3\/10: Follow the instructions on this AVG FAQ.
